CHAPTER 1: THE RUSTED TANK Tommy stood in his garage, staring at the photographs spread across his workbench like evidence at a crime scene. The faces looking back at him belonged to dead men from a different era. His weathered hands trembled as he picked up a Polaroid dated September 1973. Two men in cheap […]
CHAPTER 1: Midnight Confrontation The fluorescent lights hummed overhead like dying insects, casting harsh shadows across the empty aisles. Marcus shifted his weight, the leather of his jacket creaking softly as he assessed the situation. The tallest of the three college boys, a Milfield linebacker with a letter jacket that cost more than a week […]
CHAPTER 1: THE WEIGHT OF STEEL The rubberized mat gave off a heavy scent of synthetic foam and stale disinfectant under thirty pairs of combat boots. Lieutenant Commander Aaron Carter stood near the dry-erase board, her boots set shoulder-width apart. Her right arm remained bound tight against her ribs in a thick black brace, the […]
CHAPTER 1: Winter Terminal Tension The holiday crowd shoved past the departure boards in a restless blur of tired sighs and cold air. Emily Ward kept her eyes fixed forward, her fingers resting lightly on the frayed strap of her weathered duffel bag. Behind her, a varsity-jacketed student sneered, nudging his friend as he pointed […]
CHAPTER 1: THE SCRATCHED COUNTER The bell above the Sierra Vista Hardware door didn’t ring; it rattled with a dry, metal-on-metal groan that meant the spring was losing its temper. Adrienne Vance kept his hands in his trouser pockets, his thumbs catching on the seam of his dark trousers. Five women stood in a perfectly spaced line along the far wall, their […]
CHAPTER 1: THE LINE IN THE BARK The orange paint was still wet. I rolled the flat of my thumb over the rough bark of the white oak, pulling away a smear of bright, synthetic enamel. The tree was older than the county courthouse. It stood twelve feet inside my property line, deep within the […]
CHAPTER 1: THE CUTTING EDGE The steel blade clicked twice. 6:47 a.m. High-desert sun, white-hot and flat against the stucco. Brenda Clearwater didn’t see me in the doorway shadow. She was down on one knee in my gravel border, designer denim stretched tight, dragging a utility knife across my orange path markers. Slicing. The heavy-duty […]
CHAPTER 1: THE LINE IN THE FROST The fresh powder at the eastern boundary had been churned into a dirty gray slurry. Marcus knelt in the sub-zero wind, his thumb rubbing the cold steel casing of a mechanical caliper he’d pulled from his shop coat. He didn’t need to measure the tread width to know […]
