CHAPTER 1: THE LINE IN THE DIRT The gravel shoulder didn’t just give way under the weight of her SUV; it screamed under the tread of three tons of sterile steel. The blue tracksuit she wore was the exact color of cheap pool liner, straining at the seams as she stepped onto the dry, red […]
CHAPTER 1: THE BORDER DEMARCATION The autumn wind cut through the pines, carrying the bitter scent of damp earth and the cold, metallic tang of the steel-framed Raku kiln behind me. Karen Miller stood precisely three inches inside the asphalt curb, her manicured sneakers planting a flag on what she clearly considered a conquered territory. […]
CHAPTER 1: THE WEIGHT OF A SIGNATURE The words sharp and self-satisfied sliced through the dry afternoon air, smelling of iron fertilizer and parched grass. Karen, the president of the Harmony Creek Homeowners Association, stood on the edge of my lawn. Her frame was squeezed into a powder-blue pants suit that strained at the seams, […]
CHAPTER 1: THE STONE EMBANKMENT The wind coming off the north ridge carried the scent of wet pine needles and diesel from the interstate. Jack Miller stood with his boots planted in the damp clover, his fingers resting on the rough, cold granite of the stone wall. The wall had been dry-stacked in 1842. It […]
CHAPTER 1: THE BLOCKADE The heat coming off the asphalt of County Road 485 was a physical weight, thick with the smell of parched clay and dying cedar. Between my front bumper and the gate to my thirty acres sat twenty tons of coarse gray limestone. It was a jagged, raw mountain, steam still rising […]
CHAPTER 1: THE INCURSION ON THE LAWN The heels of her designer boots chewed into the dry, sun-baked clay of my lawn, leaving jagged scars in the dirt before she even opened her mouth. The sun was nothing more than a bruised smear behind the low-hanging rain clouds, casting a flat, shadowless light across […]
CHAPTER 1: THE REDECORATED DECK The diesel engine of my truck didn’t so much shut off as shudder to a heavy, metallic stop, leaving only the heat of the radiator to tick against the cold lakeside air. I sat behind the wheel, my hands still gray with road grime and funeral dust, staring through the […]
CHAPTER 1: THE DRY MAIN The water didn’t sputter; it died with a hollow, metallic clink inside the galvanized pipe, leaving the smell of wet iron and half-rinsed soap stinging my eyes. I stood in the clawfoot tub, the silence of the 1954 pioneer house settling around me like dust. Outside, the steady, rhythmic shuck-shuck-shuck […]
CHAPTER 1: THE WEIGHT OF COLD METAL The cold iron hook of the flatbed bit into the plastic hull of my orange kayak with a dry, grinding shriek that cut straight through the lake fog. I stood on the porch of the cabin, the ceramic mug in my hand offering the only warmth within three […]
